Learning Support

At Yarrawarrah Public School we monitor each student’s progress and provide additional learning support if this is required. Some students may require specialist help in their learning programs, perhaps because they are experiencing learning difficulties or because they may exhibit a particular talent or talents that should be developed or they may be from a non-English speaking background. Our school uses learning programs and specialised staff where needed and we work in partnership with parents and carers to assist students who have special learning needs.

Reading Recovery

Yarrawarrah PS is fortunate to be one of only six schools in the Sutherland Area offering this valuable program. Reading Recovery is available to students in Year 1 who are experiencing difficulties with reading and writing. Students in Year 1 are assessed to be included in this program. Individual students are taught for 30 minutes each day for between 12-16 weeks (maximum 20 weeks) by a specially trained Reading Recovery teacher, to accelerate their progress to the average classroom level.

Reading Recovery can halt the cycle of failure for at-risk students.

Support Teacher Programs

Presently, Yarrawarrah Public School has a LaST (Learning and Support Teacher) allocated to support students experiencing learning difficulties.

Individual Programs designed by the LaST helps students who have difficulties particularly in the area of literacy. Currently students are withdrawn individually and in groups to provide additional support. Parent tutor programs are also set up to support students experiencing difficulties on a daily basis.
