Student Leadership Opportunities

Students have the opportunity to participate in our Student Representative Council (S.R.C.) that meets regularly to discuss fundraising ideas, social functions and school issues.

Selected students also participate in various leadership opportunities  including Student Leadership in Primary Schools, Young Leaders Day and local government meetings. Additional leadership roles around the school include House Captains and Eco-Warriors which provide them with leadership ideas to maximise their potential as senior student leaders in our school.

Stage 3 is involved in training and facilitating Peer Support sessions. These activities provide opportunities for the children to lead, organise and deliver activities promoting friendship, trust and building relationships.

Year 5 are trained to use a systematic mediation process to resolve minor disputes in the playground. Peer mediation programs are used in schools to teach students the principles and techniques of conflict resolution so that they can solve their own minor disputes.

Eight members from Year 6 are elected by the student body and staff to represent and lead the school as prefects and captains.

Public Speaking

Public Speaking and Debating has become an integral part of our classroom programs at Yarrawarrah Public School. It gives every student from Kindergarten to Year 6 the opportunity to develop their confidence and skills in public speaking. Class competition winners compete in ‘Stage Finals’. The successful students at this level then proceed to represent Yarrawarrah at the Zone and District Competitions.

Chess Club

Chess Club runs one lunchtime per week.  Here, students from Kindergarten to Year 6 learn skills and practice playing the game of chess in a friendly and supportive environment. We also enter teams in the annual inter-school chess competition and run our very own school competition in Term 4.
