• At Yarrawarrah Public School we offer extra support for all students, including those experiencing difficulty as well as our gifted and talented students.  Some students in the school may require specialist help in their learning programs, perhaps because they are experiencing learning difficulties, or because they may exhibit a particular talent or talents that should be developed or they may be from a non-English speaking background.

All class teachers cater for these students in regular class programs. In addition there are specialist support staff who have expertise to help these students.

    These include:

    • School Executive
    • School Counsellor
    • Support Teacher Learning Assistance (STLA)
    • Gifted and Talented Teachers
    • Enrichment Group Teachers
    • Teacher-Librarian
    • English as a Second Language Teacher (ESL)
    • Itinerant Support Teacher (Behaviour) ISTB
    • Itinerant Support Teacher (Vision/Hearing)
    • Reading Recovery Teacher
    • Integration Support provided by Teachers Aides (Special)

    • Reading Recovery
Yarrawarrah PS is fortunate to be one of only six schools in the Sutherland Area offering this valuable program.  The program targets students in Year 1 who are reading at a level below what is expected for this stage of development.  Students on the program are give daily 30 minute individual lessons for a period of up to 20 weeks or until they are 'back on track'.

    • Support Teacher Programs

Presently, Yarrawarrah Public School has a STLA (Support teacher Learning Assistance) allocated one day each week to support students experiencing learning difficulties.

Individual Programs designed by the STLA helps students who have difficulties particularly in the area of literacy. Currently students are withdrawn individually and in groups to provide additional support.

With this year’s focus on Literacy, Yarrawarrah has assisted students with learning difficulties by providing additional support by the STLA in Reading three times a week.

    • Gifted and Talented Programs

Gifted and Talented students are given the appropriate opportunity, stimulation and the experiences to develop their potential. Enrichment programs such as Edward De Bono’s “Six Thinking Hats” and many more are provided for students in this area.

Students also have the opportunity to develop their intellectual, creative and social abilities by participating in programs such as Tournament of The Minds which is offered by the school.

    • Tournament Of Minds

Yarrawarrah Public School offers students the opportunity to be a part of this National problem solving competition.

Tournament Of Minds exists to encourage the development of creativity and higher order thinking skills in school students. It promotes learning through exploring, hypothesising, experimenting and risk taking in response to challenging problems.

Teams of students (7 in total) are selected from Years 4,5, 6 and are required to solve demanding open ended problems from one of the following disciplines:  Language Literature, Social Sciences and Maths Engineering.

Yarrawarrah PS has been a part of this prestigious competition for many years. This year we entered 2 teams one in Social Sciences and one in Maths engineering.
